Influence lines in continuous beams spreadsheet

Influence lines in continuous beams spreadsheet

This spreadsheet computes influence lines of bending moment and shear force for the sections of continuous beams.

A value of the influence line at position ‘X’ presents a force in the structural member due to a concentrated downward unit load applied at this position.

The forces in statically undetermined structure are found using method of forces described on the page ‘Solver’. The worksheet formulas are used to solve the structure for a single load. VBA is used to automate this task for various locations of moving load.

The VBA must be enabled in order to use this spreadsheet. In Office 2007/2010  the Security Warning will appear in the upper left corner of the screen. Click on Options, and then select Enable This Content option.

Reinforce RC beam and slab spreadsheet

Reinforce RC beam and slab spreadsheet

Strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) structures by the external bonding of advanced fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites has become very popular around the world due to the well-known advantages of FRP composites over other materials including their high strength-to-weight ratio and good corrosion resistance.

This excel workbook provides for the strengthening of existing RC Beams or Slabs using FRP materials in accordance with the design provisions of ACI 440-02.

Beam reaction analysis Spreadsheet

Beam reaction analysis Spreadsheet

Beam reaction analysis  is a spreadsheet program written in MS-Excel for the purpose of determining the allowable beam end reaction and the allowable end moment for the purpose of end connection design.

This program is a workbook consisting of two (2) worksheets, described as follows:

  • Doc – Documentation sheet
  • Allow. Beam End Reaction – Allowable beam end reaction and end moment

Program Assumptions and Limitations:

1.   This program uses the database of member dimensions and section properties from the “AISC Shapes Database”, Version 3.0 (2001) as well as the AISC 9th Edition (ASD) Manual (1989).

2.   The user may select from W, S, M, C, and MC shapes.

3.   This program utilizes the procedure which a steel fabricator would typically use to determine end connection design loads when end reaction values are not specified on the design and construction drawings by the engineer.  This procedure is based on the AISC 9th Edition (ASD) Manual (1989) Allowable Uniform Load Tables on pages 2-36 to 2-140 and AISC Specification Chapter K, pages 5-80 and 5-81.

4.  This program contains “comment boxes” which contain a wide variety of information including explanations of input or output items, equations used, data tables, etc.  (Note:  presence of a “comment box” is denoted by a “red triangle” in the upper right-hand corner of a cell.  Merely move the mouse pointer to the desired cell to view the contents of that particular “comment box”.)

All the worksheets are independent and self contained, so that you can move them from one workbook to another. All the worksheets are protected, but not with a password.

Elastic Analysis of Reinforced and Prestressed Sections Spreadsheet

Elastic Analysis of Reinforced and Prestressed Sections Spreadsheet

The spreadsheet presented in the previous post in this series uses the basic equation given below to find the location of the neutral axis:

For a cross section with any applied axial load at eccentricity e, measured from the compression face, and depth of the neutral axis X below the compression face:

INA = QNA(X + e)

Where QNA and INA are the first and second moments of area about the neutral axis.

To illustrate this relationship the value of INA has been plotted for a range of neutral axis positions for a typical precast bridge beam, shown below, and compared with the value QNA(X + e) for 5 different values of e.

The intersection of the INA and QNA(X + e) lines gives the depth of the neutral axis for the corresponding value of load eccentricity, e. This is illustrated in the second graph, where the value of (INA – QNA(X + e)) is plotted against the depth of the neutral axis, X, for a load eccentricity of 1 metre above the compression face.

The intersection of this line with the X axis gives the depth of the neutral axis for the specified load eccentricity.

Note: Another calculation file ULS Design Functions.zip contains User Defined Functions (UDF’s) that will find the ultimate bending capacity of any reinforced or prestressed concrete section

Single span beam analysis spreadsheet

Single span beam analysis spreadsheet

Single span beam analysis spreadsheet is a MS-Excel spreadsheet workbook for the analysis of single-span beams (simple, propped, fixed, or cantilever) and continuous beams of up to 5 spans.

The user may apply point, uniform, and varying loads, as well as applied moments. Shear, moment, slope (rotation), and deflection are computed as well as the end reactions. Shear and moment diagrams are also plotted.

There is an addtional worksheet for single-span beams that also performs AISC 9th Edition Code checks for strong-axis bending (only) as well as shear.
All the worksheets are independent and self contained, so that you can move them from one workbook to another. All the worksheets are protected, but not with a password.
